 A central part of the concept was the interior and exterior becoming one, with the exterior serving as an extension of the primary living space.
       
     
 The generous and welcoming deck is like a riverbank clearing in the forest, with light, bright chairs providing movable comfort and graphic contrast to the deep shades of the surrounding evergreen timber.
       
     
 Crisp, clean living spaces and a restrained, neutral color scheme provide an uncluttered and calming aura that is a central component of “leaving it all behind”.
       
     
 The cabin is anchored into the steep hillside, with the deck reaching out to river. A low, glass wall provides safety while still allowing seated views of to the river.
       
     
 While Homeowner Association regulations required a traditional log cabin with solid log walls and a red metal roof, we were able to transform that vocabulary into a dynamic play of solid and void.
       
     
 Polygonal shapes respond to the slope, trees, river and views, with the cabin form changing to fit the site rather than the site being changed to fit cabin.
       
     
 The Interior is all about solidity, shelter, intimacy, and the warmth of exposed heavy timber walls.
       
     
 The forms and materials are both familiar and unexpected, with an emphasis on simplicity and texture.

A client’s desire for a simple, serene place to connect with river and forest led to a Japanese take on traditional log cabin construction.
